A contractor diagnosing a heat pump here has to account for what the system has been doing in heating mode, not just cooling mode. Homes in Onondaga County, NY run heat about eight months a year, from October through May. Cold-weather heating is the hard half for a heat pump: outdoor temperatures pull the system toward its capacity limits, the compressor cycles harder, and the reversing valve works in both directions across the whole span. By the time a repair call comes in, the compressor and refrigerant circuit have already logged the kind of load that shows up as worn contacts, refrigerant drift, or a reversing valve that sticks on the first warm day.

Wiring run for an older resistance-heat system, refrigerant lines spliced and re-spliced over the years, capacitors and contactors that have absorbed season after season of hard cycling: when a heat pump in this county needs repair, what the opened unit actually contains drives the job more than any surface diagnosis can predict. Half the homes in Onondaga County, New York were built in 1964 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A system running in housing of that vintage has been asked to work against infrastructure that was laid down for something different, and a contractor tracing a fault will find that the compressor terminals, the disconnect wiring, and the low-voltage control circuits each carry that accumulated load. Whether a part is still in production for a system of that age is the other variable that shapes the scope and the timeline.

The Parts of a Heat Pump a Contractor Checks First

Isometric cutaway illustration of a house showing attic ductwork, an indoor air handler, furnished rooms, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines along the exterior wall.

The outdoor unit sits outside the house and holds the compressor and the condenser coil. The compressor is where most repair calls begin. When it fails, the system stops moving heat altogether. The condenser coil wraps around it, and a bent or blocked coil is a common reason a unit struggles before it quits.

Inside the house, the air handler contains the evaporator coil and the blower fan that pushes conditioned air through the home. The refrigerant lines run between the two units, and the reversing valve inside the outdoor cabinet is what lets the system heat in winter and cool in summer. A contractor checks the valve when the system blows the wrong temperature.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines which components apply to your specific system and what condition each one is in.

Severe Weather Events in Onondaga County

Extreme weather puts heat pumps under load they were not sized to ignore, and enough of it shortens the life of components that were otherwise running fine. How hard the equipment works in a given place is a local fact, which is why repair demand here follows local conditions.
