Sizing a heat pump for Rockland County means accounting for a heating season that runs nearly the full calendar, not a mild shoulder stretch. Homes in Rockland County, NY run heat about eight months a year, from October through May. The compressor cycles through cold that drops heat pump capacity at exactly the moments the house needs it most, so a contractor has to run a load calculation against actual local temperatures before selecting equipment or quoting refrigerant circuit size. A system that comes up short on capacity works harder to close the gap, and the heat exchanger and reversing valve carry that extra load across the whole season. Poor installation quality shows the same way: a refrigerant charge that is slightly off, or ductwork that does not match the air handler, produces a gap the system fills by running longer.

Ductwork in houses built for an earlier generation of heating equipment was sized around that equipment's demands, and those demands differ from what a heat pump moves. Half the homes in Rockland County, New York were built in 1971 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a heat pump installation here has to open the system up and check what the ducts actually do before a unit can be selected, because a mismatch in airflow capacity means the equipment underperforms regardless of what it is rated for. The electrical service is the same story: panels installed when these houses went up were not planned for a heat pump's draw, and what a licensed contractor finds at the panel shapes the scope of the job as much as anything in the equipment itself.

What Gets Installed With a New Heat Pump

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house showing interior rooms with furniture, ceiling ductwork connected to an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit linked by refrigerant lines.

The outdoor unit is the piece a homeowner notices first. It sits on a pad or wall bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and the outdoor coil, which together do the heavy work of moving heat. Inside, the air handler mounts in a closet, attic, or mechanical room and circulates conditioned air through the home.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units, connecting them through a small penetration in the wall. A thermostat goes on an interior wall where it reads the air temperature and tells the system when to run. A disconnect box is mounted near the outdoor unit to give the contractor a safe way to cut power at that point.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and connected in your home.
